A Family History That Spans Three Generations
Butcher’s Swimming Pool has been going strong for three generations. Currently owned by Collin Butcher, this local gem was actually started by Richard Butcher, Collin’s grandfather in 1958.
Richard, a long-time Houston resident, opened a small, family-run swimming pool supply shop with the promise of making pool care and maintenance as painless as possible. A practical man, and somewhat of a chemist, Richard was among the first to formulate and bottle pool algaecide. His product, Sparkle, marked the beginning for him and his family in the swimming pool industry.
In 1983, Richard’s son Greg Butcher led the family business. Greg remembers when the “hands-on” approach to the business was the order of the day. He explains, “In those days, pool chemicals were not pre-packaged. One of our jobs was to scoop the chemicals from the barrels in the backroom and mix whatever was required prior to packaging.” Within a few years, quality products and friendly service became Butcher’s trademarks.
Greg’s son, Collin, also took great interest in the pool industry, cleaning pools, and working in the retail store after school, on the weekends, and during seasonal breaks. Collin graduated from college in 2008 with a degree in architecture and construction management.
Collin has expanded the company’s services to meet the needs of commercial accounts as well. Whether Collin is coaching the do-it-yourself client or instructing the engineering department of a commercial account, he’s the pool maintenance veteran every owner is glad to know!
